Five document errors that hold cargo at the border
Every delay costs money per day, and most of the causes can be sorted in advance.
Most waiting at the border comes not from the queue but from mismatches in the paperwork.
1. The invoice description does not match the goods
The most common case. The invoice says "textile products" while the load is finished garments — a different customs code.
2. Weight discrepancy
The gross weight on paper does not match the weighbridge. A small gap is fine, but over five per cent triggers an inspection.
3. No certificate of origin
If a preferential duty rate applies, the certificate of origin is mandatory. It can be sent later, but the cargo waits.
4. Incomplete packing list
How many packages and what is in each — it has to be itemised box by box.
5. Signature and stamp
The signature is invisible on the scan or the stamp is unreadable. A small thing that costs a day.
